Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge is located about 1,250 miles west-northwest of Honolulu. The island is home to thousands of seabirds, including the world's largest populations of Laysan and Black-footed Albatrosses.

Midway is also famous as a World War II Pacific battle site. In 1988, Midway was established as a National Wildlife Refuge  through an agreement with the U.S. Navy, transitioning the site from bullets to birds.
